Scrambler Therapy
Scrambler Therapy® ST-5A, formerly called Calmare Therapy, is an advanced device designed to address chronic neuropathic and cancer-related pain. It works by sending mild electrical impulses that "reprogram" pain signals, helping your nervous system, including the brain, to interpret them as "no pain."
Unlike typical devices like TENS units, Scrambler Therapy® delivers a "no pain" message through a specialized algorithm. By transmitting these signals via electrodes placed around the painful area, it retrains the nerves to accept the new pain-free information, providing patients with effective relief.
The Process
1. Initial Consultation & Assessment
Before starting each session, Dr. Marisa Chang will meet with you to review your diagnosis and pinpoint the specific areas of pain.
2. Electrode Placement
Once the treatment plan has been determined, electrodes are carefully placed around the areas experiencing pain in a strategic pattern. This ensures the signals are delivered effectively.
3. Activating the Scrambler Therapy Device
The device is then activated, and the intensity of the signals is gradually increased. Patients will experience a mild tingling sensation under each electrode as the power is adjusted.
4. Signal Adjustment
The signal strength will then slowly be increased to a level that effectively blocks the pain without causing discomfort. If the pain isn’t fully reduced to zero (or close to zero on a pain scale), the electrodes will be repositioned to more effective locations and the process will be repeated.
5. Treatment Session
Once pain relief is achieved, the patient can relax for approximately 30 minutes while the device continues to deliver the pain-blocking signals.
6. Ongoing Treatment Plan
Patients typically return for daily treatments until they experience 48 hours of continuous pain relief, with most patients requiring around 10 sessions on average.
